Living in Carmel is indeed a great pleasure for all of our citizens. The city's rich and robust atmosphere is mirrored in our schools, neighborhoods, family organizations and competitive economic environment.
The City of Carmel is known for its safe, quiet, family-oriented neighborhoods. With over a 122 existing neighborhoods, Carmel homeowners have a variety of choices available, from decorator show houses to turn of the century bungalows. Moreover, quality and desirability are attributes of every Carmel subdivision. In fact, Carmel homes have appreciated steadily over the last 20 years as the city continues to be one of the fastest growing cities in Indiana.
Demographics
Carmel is a city located in Hamilton County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 37,733. It is considered to be a suburb of Indianapolis. Carmel has a large number of roundabouts. Carmel is located at 39°58'23" North, 86°6'28" West (39.972917, -86.107877). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 46.4 km˛ (17.9 mi˛). 46.1 km˛ (17.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.61% water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 37,733 people, 13,597 households, and 10,564 families residing in the city. The population density is 818.0/km˛ (2,118.4/mi˛). There are 14,107 housing units at an average density of 305.8/km˛ (792.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 92.63% White, 1.47% African American, 0.14% Native American, 4.38% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 1.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 13,597 households of which 43.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.3% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% are non-families. 18.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.16.
In the city the population is spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $81,583, and the median income for a family is $94,210. Males have a median income of $70,618 versus $38,917 for females. The per capita income for the city is $38,906. 2.5% of the population and 1.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.5% of those under the age of 18 and 2.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History
On April 13, 1837, John Felps (Phelps), Alexander Mills, Seth Green, and Daniel Warren, laid out the Town of Bethlehem. The plat contained a total of fourteen lots. The area, previously inhabited by Delaware (Miami) Indians, soon became inhabited by Quakers.
Andrew Jackson was President of the United States at the time.
As a wilderness it was known for its fur trading. The first General Store was constructed in 1837. In 1845, a framed school house building was constructed near the Town's crossroads. In 1846, a Post Office was established. It was, at this time, the town residents were notified that the United States Post Office already had another town registered by the name of Bethlehem in Indiana. Consequently, in 1874, by a referendum vote of 33 in favor and 12 against, the town was officially incorporated and adopted the name "Carmel."
In 1882, rails of the Monon Railroad were laid through Carmel, and a depot was opened in 1883. The railroad depot remained open until 1974. The Carmel-Clay Historical Society is in charge of the restoration of the original depot.
In 1900, a shoot-out at the Jeffries Livery Barn took place. Officer William Frank Carey was killed. To date, Officer Carey, is the only law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty.
In 1904, electricity was installed throughout Carmel.
In 1914, the Carmel Public Library was dedicated. It was built with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation for a total of $11,000.00. It was used until 1972 when it was purchased by the Town of Carmel, and then used for official offices and as a Courthouse.
In 1921, the Carmel Volunteer Fire Department purchased its first fire truck.
In 1924, Leslie Haines invented one of the Country's first automatic stop-and-go traffic signals. It was located at the intersection of Main Street and Range Line Road.
In 1930, a Water System was installed, and in 1933 a gas pipeline was installed.
In 1937, a Centennial celebration took place in Carmel. In 1962, Carmel celebrated its 125th anniversary with parades and street fairs.
In 1949, the Carmel Theatre opened. Ticket prices were 40 cents for adults and 20 cents for children. Candy bars were sold for a nickel each. The theatre was closed and razed by the City in 1984. In 1985, the "Downtown Park" was dedicated on the original site of the Carmel Theatre.
In 1958, a new high school was erected on East Main Street, for a total cost of $1,600,000.00. Additions to the high school were added in 1963, 1969, and 1977. The Carmel Elementary School was opened in 1961 and in 1964, the Carmel Junior High School was opened.
In 1965, Keystone Avenue (Route 431) was opened. This same year, the areas of Woodland Springs, Cool Creek, and Keystone Square, were annexed to Carmel, doubling the population.
In 1971, the Carmel Court was established. The Plan Commission was also expanded to fourteen members from Clay Township and seven from Carmel, that same year.
In November of 1974, a referendum took place as to whether Carmel should become a Fourth Class City. The residents voted in the affirmative.
In December of 1976, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra presented its first concert.
In 1985, the Science and Technology Park opened at Meridian and 116th Streets. That same year, St. Vincent Carmel Hospital opened on North Meridian.
In 1986, the ground breaking took place for the Carmel Civic Square, with city offices being relocated during the years thereafter.
April 13, 1987 marked the 150th anniversary of the founding of Carmel. Today it is known for a heritage of culture and a rich tradition of State Championships of Athletic Teams. The new Carmel Civic Square has become the "showpiece of Georgian architectural splendor."

Education

It's not surprising that the reason many families choose to live in the Carmel Clay community is because of its excellent public school system. Its students' scholastic, artistic and athletic achievements are consistently outstanding year after year. For example, on average 89% of Carmel High School Students enroll in four-year colleges. Add 4% of the class entering two-year colleges or trade schools and 2% were foreign exchange students returning to their own countries to pursue further education there, for a total of 95% of Carmel High School graduates continuing their education.
The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score results show that Carmel High School students scored an average of 551 on the math portion of the test, 53 points higher than the state average and 39 points higher than the national average. On the verbal portion, Carmel students scored an average of 536, 40 points higher than the state average and 31 points higher than the national average. These and other indicators demonstrate that Carmel Clay students are well-prepared throughout their educational careers for high scholastic achievement.
Achievements in the Arts and Academics.
- In the performing arts, Carmel students have won state or regional championships in marching band, swing choir, jazz band, orchestra and drama.
- The student publications have won honors at the state and national level.
- The speech club and the academic competition teams have achieved numerous successes in state competition.
- The Science Olympiad Team has achieved the highest ranking at state and national levels.
While Carmel Clay students are serious about academics, they are also serious about athletics.
Carmel High School won its first IHSAA State Championship in 1970 when Coach Don Huffer's boys' golf team captured the state title with a team score of 611 in the first year of the two day tournament format. Since that beginning, CHS has won 87 state championships; 78 of which are IHSAA titles, 8 Indiana High School Soccer Association titles, and one Indiana Cheerleading Association championship. The Hounds have won state championships in 16 of the 21 sports offered at CHS. In addition to 84 championships, CHS has been the state runner-up 40 times since 1966. Of the 20 IHSAA sports, the Greyhounds have been state champion or state runner-up in 19 of the 20 currently offered.
A great source of pride are the 22 Carmel High School graduates who have received a state mental attitude award. In addition to these outstanding young people, CHS is the home of 145 individual, doubles, or relay state champions.
The teaching system, which serves about a 50 square mile area, includes Carmel High School, Clay Junior High, Carmel Junior High and nine elementary schools. For information about Carmel Clay public schools, call the Carmel Clay School administrative offices or visit their web site.
